Pat Cummins bowling

The Australian skipper has secured over 300 dismissals in 71 Test matches with an stellar bowling average.

The Australian selection chief George Bailey has declared that captain Pat Cummins will play a "major part" in this winter's historic rivalry.

Speculation had been growing that the 32-year-old might miss the series due to a persistent back stress problem that remained unresolved.

Initial reports from the squad suggested no official announcement had been made regarding his involvement, with the Test matches kicking off on the 21st of November in Perth.

He revealed that Cummins is "building up" and remained hopeful about his chances of being involved.

"We know that the window is narrowing and various factors involved, not just his injury, but further aspects," he commented.

"It's positive. There's strong faith that he'll participate in a key capacity. Ideally starting in Perth. Otherwise, we'll adjust."

Injury History

The captain missed the ODI and T20 games against New Zealand and India last month after medical tests showed a lumbar bone stress.

Previous incidents include of recurring issues, with setbacks in 2012-13, 2013-14 and 2015-16 causing him to miss several home seasons in four years.

He emphasized he would be proactive in his approach in his comeback strategy to secure his spot for the series.

Bailey noted that he did not know if the captain had resumed bowling as part of his recovery but acknowledged it was "pressing" for him to recover fully for the opener.

Backup Options

If he's unavailable, veteran batsman Smith will assume leadership.

The talented all-rounder was excluded lately from the national team for their limited-overs matches against the subcontinent side as a precautionary measure because of discomfort in his torso.

Bailey described it as a "minor" injury and confirmed that he'll feature in the domestic first-class competition, so will be "in a good place to be ready to bowl."

"We put so much time has gone into developing the strategy for him to be available for the opening match as an dual-role player," Bailey explained.

"Originally, he'd only feature in the first two ODIs regardless. How he handles the cricket bat in white-ball cricket, should it hinder progress for a short period, we opted to adopt a safer strategy."
