Roughly fifty vehicles have been smeared with what seems to be human bodily fluid in the German city of Hanau near Frankfurt, according to authorities.
Vehicles, exterior walls and postboxes were vandalized, in some cases with Nazi symbols, they reported in a statement.
Police say they were notified in the late hours on Wednesday night, when a individual noticed that a automobile in the Lamboy neighborhood of Hanau had been covered with a reddish-hued substance.
The fluid had been drawn in the pattern of a banned symbol, they added.
Police then located multiple other smeared cars and house walls in the adjacent neighborhood.
Nazi symbols are illegal in Germany under regulations banning the public display of symbols from the Nazi era.
Officials state early analysis suggest the substance was likely human blood.
"There is still no clue as to its origin; investigators are currently not informed of any harm in relation with the incident," they stated.
Local authorities stated they were working "to solve the incident" and have appealed to the public for information.
A high-ranking political figure commented the vandalism made him stunned and had to be solved quickly.
"This act strikes at the core of Hanau and reawakens the trauma of the right-wing attack half a decade ago," he stated on a platform, recalling the death of nine people by a assailant focusing on residents of immigrant origin in February 2020.
