British Air Force Typhoon FGR4s have operated alongside French aircraft in a coordinated attack on an underground arms cache in Syria used by the Islamic State group (IS), as stated by the UK's MoD.

The location, pinpointed through reconnaissance, was thought to be containing munitions and bombs, the statement said, and was situated in hills just north of the ancient city of Palmyra in Syria's central region.

"Our fighter planes used precision-guided Paveway IV munitions to strike a series of access tunnels providing entry to the site... preliminary assessments are that the target was engaged successfully," the ministry announced.

There was no evidence of any civilian casualties in the attack late on Saturday and each participating jet made a safe return, the ministry further stated.

The Typhoon FGR4s were supported by a Voyager refuelling tanker.

The Islamic State group - also known as the so-called Islamic State - enforced militant control over parts of both Syria and Iraq before its territorial defeat in 2019.

"This operation demonstrates British leadership, and resolve to stand shoulder to shoulder with our allies, to stamp out any revival of Daesh and their dangerous and violent ideologies in the area," the British Defence Secretary the minister remarked.

RAF aircraft have conducted overwatch operations over Syrian airspace to "prevent any attempted comeback" of Islamic State subsequent to its military defeat at the battle of Baghuz in 2019, the ministry said.

"I extend gratitude to every member of our armed forces participating in this operation for their skill and their courage," Healey commented. "Including them were thousands of British personnel deployed over the holidays. This mission, to eliminate dangerous terrorists who pose a risk to our safety, shows how British military are ready to step up, all year round, ensuring Britain's security domestically and strong abroad."

During December, the American forces executed what it called a "massive strike" targeting Daesh sites in the country, subsequent to an attack claimed the lives of two American soldiers and a civilian linguist in the Palmyra area.

The United Nations estimates Islamic State still has an estimated 5,000 to 7,000 combatants in both countries.
