A fatal train crash in the southern state of Oaxaca has claimed the lives of at least 13 people, an incident likely to revive opposition criticisms regarding the rapidity and management of the country's key government projects.
The disaster occurred on the Interoceanic Corridor train, a line constructed to link the Atlantic Ocean and Pacific Ocean across the slenderest section of the Isthmus of Tehuantepec. This initiative was designed to offer an alternative rail cargo route to the Panama Canal, with the goal of spurring regional growth in the area.
“We are going to rigorously clarify the reasons behind this tragedy,” stated the country's president.
The leader announced that, of the some 250 people on board, another 98 were hurt, with five of those in critical condition. The official noted plans to travel to Oaxaca to confer with those affected.
Major Initiative of Past Leadership
The Interoceanic Train was a cornerstone infrastructure project of the immediate past president, whose term finished the prior year. This project was a hallmark of his administration's developmental vision for the southeastern region.
Another ambitious railway undertaking from that era, a passenger and freight circuit around the Yucatán Peninsula, was also central to the comprehensive effort to kickstart the economic fortunes of a relatively less developed part of the country.
Construction Oversight and Risks Apprehensions
The development of both rail lines was managed by the armed forces, marking a dramatic expansion of its responsibilities in public infrastructure. They were completed at an rapid speed, surpassing forecasts to be at least partly launched before the end of that administration.
However, this rushed timetable had concurrently sparked significant questions over construction quality.
- Sunday's accident was the third such incident on the Interoceanic Train within the past twelve months.
- This includes an earlier collision this month when a train struck a truck at a crossing.
- The other major rail project has also had several non-lethal derailments.
Appeals for Audit and Pause
In the wake of the catastrophe, the head of a primary political opposition urged an prompt pause in the building and running of all such projects.
This pause was requested while awaiting a comprehensive technical review. The party emphasized that the situation "calls for prompt explanations."
In reaction, the national leader maintained that the train had been operating in complete compliance with all operational standards. Assurances were given that the government would remain "responsible" in both the construction and operation of these national projects.
