Tetris Couldn't Triumph at This Gaming Ceremony — A New Category Could Fix That

As any prominent prize-giving event nears, one notices an outcry for the addition additional classifications to honor overlooked contributions and satisfy the passions of enthusiasts dedicated to specific genres.

My colleague previously argued supporting a scary games classification. That would be fantastic. Equally deserving are tabletop games, representing a passionate advocate's mission. However, I must insist when I prioritize because like all dedicated enthusiasts, I possess a compelling case backing this proposal is the most urgent and important of all. Here's the proposal: There should be a classification for brain-teasing titles.

Organizing Gaming Categories

Categorizing art by genre defies precise measurement; it’s very subjective, and inevitably generate discussions and end in fuzzy definitions. There’s a reason movie academies avoid this approach. However, it represents an unavoidable compromise within the realm of interactive entertainment, which are so diverse they barely qualify one unified medium.

For comprehensive acknowledgment of gaming accomplishments to gain proper attention, and for games of all stripes to receive proper recognition, specific award classifications remain vital.

Current Gaming Award Categories

Leading game ceremonies currently feature award types recognizing Action, Adventure-action titles, Role-Playing, Combat games, Simulation and strategy titles, and Sports/Racing games. Together, these classifications effectively encompass a lot of ground, making space possible accommodating various experiences.

This doesn't apply to brain-teasing titles. No appropriate category exists to accommodate them. Consider three of outstanding current releases, showing diverse approaches: structural challenges of one title, the pulse-pounding block-matching in a different title, engaging interpersonal challenges in another game. Which classification works within current classifications? Unfortunately, nowhere.

Acknowledgment Issues

Numerous examples exist excellent brain-teasers launched regularly without proper recognition in entertainment awards, unless they happen to qualify award groups including Mobile Game, VR/AR Game, or the intensely contested small studio competitions.

  • One classic puzzle game wasn’t nominated in any category in 2014
  • A different innovative game was excluded that year
  • Popular arranging title was overlooked that year
  • Limited numbers of puzzle games barely qualified for small studio or handheld classifications

Importance of Logic Titles

Commonly they're small games, but the art of the puzzle game carries substantial weight. Well-known matching games rank among most engaged experiences worldwide maintaining this status for many years.

The legendary block-stacking game rivals popular creative games for the title of best-selling game of all time; it additionally competes as greatest title ever. Brain-teasers form essential building blocks to the art of video games, and they are in conversation with diverse game types.

Proposal and Rationale

Puzzle games wouldn’t have such difficulty. It would be easy to populate five nominees interesting, varied, worthy titles every year with ease — actually, with challenge, given the need to exclude numerous deserving experiences.

And to reiterate, these are games that otherwise have no home at major gaming awards. Brain-teaser creators function at the challenging frontier interactive creation, creating some of the purest expressions of gaming itself. Just like cinema stunt performers, they deserve recognition. Don't make them wait generations.
