The Trump Administration to Distribute 50% Snap Assistance in November

The federal administration announced it would grant reduced relief to countless SNAP recipients as the continuing federal closure neared a record-breaking duration.

Benefit Reduction Details

Amid growing concern for the around 42 million people participating in the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program, the USDA confirmed it would use emergency money to sustain assistance, although at just 50% of the standard allotment households typically get.

Money for the program legally expired on the weekend due to the budget standoff, now in its 34th day with no sign of completion.

Legal Actions

The decision came in a court filing after prior rejections to provide emergency funding on purported legal grounds. A court had decided the government could not deny program funds as a result of the shutdown.

Following the legal directive, the administration announced it would be "pleased" to supply emergency funding for the program.

Implementation Challenges

Officials indicated that funds could begin distribution by the coming days, but stressed the need for further guidance from the judiciary on how to properly redirect money for SNAP support.

  • Several authorities have indicated it will take multiple days or even longer periods to distribute funds to low-income families.
  • Long queues have been reported at pantries across the country.
  • In several locations, stadium car parks were transformed into distribution sites.

State Crisis Measures

Several authorities, like New York, Oregon, and Virginia, announced states of emergency to supply temporary funds for benefits. However, these sums were expected to be a limited percentage of the normal federal funding.

The federal spending for SNAP total approximately $8 billion each month throughout the United States.
