Trump's Progressive Warning Overlooks The Continent's True Threat: Economic Stagnation.

Donald Trump's national security strategy offers a misguided assessment of the European Union. The document asserts that open-border policies and so-called "woke" agendas pose an existential risk to the continent's identity. However, this perspective is based on a fundamental misinterpretation of the situation. The true challenge facing the EU is not societal but technological and economic lag.

The Stark Economic Gap Separating Europe and the US

The data reveal a sobering contrast. From 2008 and 2023, American economic output grew by 87%, while a paltry thirteen and a half percent growth for the European Union. During this time, EU GDP per capita dropped from over three-quarters to just half of the US level. Remarkably, even Mississippi now boasts a greater average income than several leading EU nations like Italy and France.

Currently, about 50% of the world’s top fifty tech companies are American, while only four are European.

The Innovation Shortfall: The Core Problem

This widening disparity stems from stronger productivity growth in the US, largely due to technological innovation and better use of resources. The landscape of world technology dominance is decidedly US-centric. In the last fifty years, 241 US firms have scaled into enterprises valued at more than $10bn, compared with just 14 in the European continent.

This gap prompts a pressing question: In the race for future industries like semiconductors, AI, and fusion energy, where does the EU positioned? Most analysts concede it is largely a contest between two between the United States and China, with Europe entering at a clear handicap.

Root Causes of the Continent's Technological Lag

Several key reasons explain this technological divide.

  • Venture Capital: The US boasts a much more robust and agile network for financing new ventures. Europe still lacks a true unified investment market, which caps the growth potential of new firms.
  • Regulatory Fragmentation: Excessive and fragmented rules hinder Europe. A US startup can introduce a product under one regulatory framework to access a consumer base of hundreds of millions. The European Union, despite a bigger population size, is split among twenty-seven separate systems, creating significant internal barriers.
  • Mindset Differences: Attitudes toward entrepreneurial failure vary greatly. In parts of Europe, a startup's collapse was historically met with stigma, whereas in the United States, it is often considered a badge of experience.
  • Defense Spending: The United States enjoys a tightly woven academic-military-industrial complex. Europe's long-term lack of spending in defense has weakened its capacity for breakthrough innovation.

A Path Forward: Grounds for Cautious Optimism

In spite of these challenges, there are reasons for hope. European leaders are increasingly aware of the severe threat and have begun to advance substantial change. Notable reports on EU competitiveness and the single market point to the need for major changes.

Given appropriate incentives and rule changes, these assets could support much higher levels of commercial innovation.

Europe still possesses significant strengths: high-quality human capital, excellent schools and universities, and world-class labs. Coupled with a large internal market and substantial household savings, these elements could unleash a new wave of venture creation.

Crucially, even if the EU does not take the lead in creating next-generation tech, it can still significantly boost productivity by adopting and adapting advancements from elsewhere.

A Critical Juncture

Europe now stands at a decisive crossroads. As the saying goes, decline often happens "gradually and then suddenly". So far, the continent's technological decline has been steady. But, without bold steps to tackle its deep-seated problems, today's slow erosion could turn into a rapid and permanent loss of global economic relevance.
