New research reveals that individuals who come off popular GLP-1 drugs like Wegovy and Mounjaro may regain shed pounds far faster than those who halt conventional diet and exercise plans.
Findings released in a prominent medical journal points out that while overweight individuals frequently drop about a fifth of their total mass while using the jabs, the mass is regained at an average rate of 0.8 kg per month after stopping.
"Users purchasing these treatments need to be cognizant of the potential of fast rebound weight gain when the therapy concludes," stated lead investigator Dr. Susan Jebb.
This pace of regain means a return to starting weight in about one and a half years.
Comparing Treatments
The analysis, which reviewed dozens of trials involving thousands of participants, contrasted the effects of these new drugs with other pills.
Scientists point out that individuals who lose weight through lifestyle changes alone typically see a more gradual creep back—approximately 0.1 kg a month—after stopping.
Explaining the Fast Regain
Experts propose the way of the injections is key to understanding the amplified weight return.
These medications mimic a natural hormone called glucagon-like peptide-1, which controls hunger.
"Long-term administration of GLP-1 levels several times higher than the body's typical production might result in the system to produce less of its own natural hormone, and could diminish sensitivity to its effects," explained Dr. Adam Collins, a dietetics expert.
"Withdrawal of this medication means hunger is uncontrolled, making excessive eating far more likely."
A Chronic Condition?
Health authorities advise the injections for people with obesity-related medical conditions, alongside prescribed lifestyle changes.
A number of clinicians argue that, due to the likelihood of relapse, the treatment is often life-long.
This view is echoed by drug manufacturers, who note that the findings "emphasize the persistent nature of obesity," akin to managing diseases like diabetes.
Patient Experiences
People who have come off the jabs describe a powerful resurgence of appetite.
"I experienced a trigger that goes on and you're instantly starving," recalled one woman.
The struggle is worsened if individuals have not established permanent dietary or behavioural modifications during treatment.
Significant Adoption
Figures indicate that a significant number of adults in the UK have used these injections in the last 12 months, with desire remaining high.
- Use is greater among women than men.
- The middle-aged age group shows the highest level of interest.
- Many obtain the drugs through private healthcare rather than the NHS.
Finally, clinicians caution that while GLP-1 drugs are potent agents for weight loss, they are not a permanent cure and long-term success hinges on combined behavioural changes.
